Blacksmith
Greg is a hobbyist blacksmith transforming metal through heat, hammer, and patience into knives, homewares and a growing range of more sculptural pieces.
His interest in ironwork began when his teenage son joined a Viking re-enactment group. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a passion as Greg began learning the craft of forging.
About Greg’s work
Inspired by traditional weaponry, his first pieces were daggers and axes made using a homemade coal-fired forge and recycled steel. He later imported a new gas forge, which heats more quickly and gives him more time to experiment with different steels, techniques, and forms.
Although still very much a hobbyist blacksmith, Greg has become a regular exhibitor in the Raglan Arts Weekend, where his forged pieces often draw plenty of interest from visitors.
Greg enjoys the hands-on process of transforming raw or recycled metal using traditional forging methods and heat-treatment processes to strengthen blades and create subtle colour variations in the finished metal. Natural materials such as stone and timber are sometimes incorporated into his work, particularly in sculptural pieces and knife handles. His work blends craftsmanship with artistic expression.
