Creative Profile – Greg Hogan

Greg gives new meaning to the phrase “getting hammered”!

As a hobbyist blacksmith, he enjoys the physicality of transforming scrap metal into utilitarian objects and artistic creations through the power of heat.

Greg’s interest in blacksmithing began when his teenage son joined a Viking re-enactment group and his passion grew as he developed his forging skills.

Inspired by weaponry, Greg’s initial designs were daggers and axes made using recycled steel and a homemade coal fired forge. A new custom-made gas forge capable of creating larger pieces has allowed him to experiment with different techniques and create a wider variety of items.

Greg creates beautiful and functional bespoke items including blades, candlesticks and other homewares, along with jewellery and more ornamental pieces.

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet Greg in the studio he shares with Toni Kingstone and view his work.

Greg will explain the forging process, and the tools and techniques used. You’ll also learn about the different types of steel required to create his knives and sculptures.

There will be a small variety of forge work on display during the open studio tour, with some pieces available for purchase.
